I was there when Tweedy did this and it was anything but freestyle (though maybe that term’s a lot looser in definition than I am presuming). In fact, Tweedy said he practiced this song quite a bit to get it up to even this ramshackle (and surprisingly moving) version. As he says here “I really overestimated myself…or underestimated the Black Eyed Peas.” And later “Having spent some time with their material…they are evil geniuses.”

i was supposed to go to this on tuesday but missed it because of that whole fainting, hitting my head and chipping a tooth excitement. i heard a lot about his performance on twitter that night but hadnt seen it yet.
truly amazing. i think i will watch again. and then probably again.
